James & Other Apes is a unique series of portraits by James Mollison who photographed gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans using the aesthetic of the passport photograph- its ubiquitous style inferring the idea of identity. The photographer traveled to Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia to meet orphans of the bush meat trade and live pet trade. The full set of 50 images are now available exclusively at Contour.   High-res

Contour by Getty Images photographer Christopher Wahl has just launched his new personal work titled The Heather Project. The work is a detailed portrait of Heather Ogden, a principal dancer for the National Ballet of Canada, demonstrating her daily routine to maintain physical strength via exhaustion and exertion. This extension of Chris’ still portrait work is a transparent photographers view of the moving image, as if to point the camera but not press the button.

At Getty Images, we are keenly aware of the skill level and attention to detail which portraiture photography requires. To celebrate excellence in portraiture by emerging talent, we have launched the Contour by Getty Images Portrait Prize.

A distinguished panel of judges, lead by famed Photographer Terry O’Neill, will determine the winner of the prize, which will be a grant of $10,000 USD, awarded to one photographer, with less than five years experience in the field, based on their existing portraiture work. Applicants must submit 10-20 images from their portrait work (either individual images or a series) along with a biography, brief explanation of their approach to portraiture, and description of what they would like to accomplish in their careers, (each in 1000 words or less).

Applications will be accepted beginning April 1 and the deadline will be May 15, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. GMT (London time). The winner will be announced in September.   High-res
